There’s never been a better time than today to hunt elk in Alberta. Once confined to the mountains
and foothills, elk are growing in numbers and expanding their distribution. These days,
thriving elk populations can be found from the Peace River valley in the north to central Alberta’s
parkland and mixedwood forests, to the rolling prairie grasslands of the south. The Minister’s
Special License (MSL) gives the lucky winning bidder an outstanding opportunity to take
an elk that will be the envy of any North American jurisdiction. Consider that in 2020, Shawn
O’Shea harvested an Alberta non-typical elk with his bow that scored a mind-boggling 449 ½
inches! Pope and Young has recognized this as the largest bow-harvested non-typical American
elk ever taken. Several other Alberta elk, both non-typical and typical, have been harvested that
scored in excess of 400 inches—the next could be yours. With recent improvements to the Alberta
MSL program, this premier opportunity is not to be missed. Changes to the program include
the expansion to year-round hunting and the use of your weapon-of-choice (in compliance
with Alberta’s provincial hunting regulations.) And you can return as often as you like through
the year until you find the elk of your dreams; your Alberta elk hunt will be an experience you’ll
remember forever.
The purchaser of this license will be authorized to hunt one (1) Elk anytime between September
1, 2023, and August 31, 2024. This license is valid in Alberta, in any Wildlife Management
Unit where an elk hunting season is identified in the 2023 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations.
This license does not authorize hunting in any location where hunting is prohibited as
outlined in the Wildlife Regulation and the Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations. This license
does not authorize hunting on Sunday in Wildlife Management Units where the Sunday hunting
of big game is prohibited. Funds derived from the sale of this license will be used to supporting
Alberta’s understanding of its wildlife resources, building up foundational management data
through various wildlife inventory efforts.
Conditions: The license cannot be resold or transferred. The buyer can be an Alberta resident,
a non-resident, or a non-resident alien. If the license holder is a non-resident or non-resident
alien, they will be required to hire a licensed Alberta outfitter and be accompanied by a designated
guide. To find an outfitter, the purchaser should visit the APOS website at apos.ab.ca.
The cost for hiring the outfitter is not included in the sale price of the license.
