When most hunters think about trophy antelope, Alberta rarely comes to mind. That makes
the province the best kept secret in the antelope hunting world! Alberta represents the extreme
northern range of this iconic North American species and thus the body size and trophy quality
of the mature bucks tend to compare favorably to specimens found elsewhere. The provincial
record of 90" was taken in 2013 and several other entries that exceed the 82" Boone and Crockett
minimum have been taken in over the years. Recent successive mild winters have currently
resulted in a steady increase in the population and relatively low harvest levels have ensured that
there are a good number of mature bucks 6-9 years of age, the optimum ages for trophy quality,
on the landscape. Mature bucks start to gather does in mid-July, and by late August are jealously
defending their home territories against other bucks intent on supplanting them for their
breeding rights. Whether you're a rifle hunter or an archer looking for some fast action decoying,
the antelope rut in Alberta is the time to harvest your dream buck of a lifetime!
