Enduring Freedom-Arizona’s Iraqi-Afghanistan Memorial
A profound tribute of honor and patriotism to those who served and sacrificed to protect our nation.
Feeling both humbled and honored to have been selected to do this project, I determined that I would focus on 3 basic elements to the memorial; making it Simple, Powerful, Timeless……
Standing from any point, I wanted the viewer’s eyes to be looking forward, from the names on the base to the 3 symbols and back again.
The challenge to designing a military memorial is coming up with a symbol of the military as a whole. Short of building a memorial the size of a regiment to include every branch, rank, gender, etc. My rationale was that most military personnel start the same way - as a lowly private. In war, the foot soldier is usually the first to fall, as they make up the bulk of the military, therefore my solution was to select a single figure as the symbol.
The figure, dressed for combat, salutes simultaneously, the American flag and the Field Cross, honoring both his country and fallen comrades just as those who fought in bygone wars.
The Field Cross symbolizes a fallen comrade on the battlefield. The rifle with the bayonet stuck in the ground signifies the warrior will never fight again. The rifle without the magazine represents the fight is finished. The dog tags, helmet, and boots implies the comrade paid the ultimate price.
To find a model, I went to the Marine Corps Armory and chose Neil Price, who is a Veteran of the Iraqi war, is from Arizona, and is half Navajo and half Hopi. I’ve been told that the Native Americans have the highest number of veterans per capita of any ethnic group, and especially here in Arizona, and their patriotism has never been questioned.
In my opinion, today’s troops are some of the finest ever to be charged with protecting our country, and i have the utmost confidence and respect for them, This memorial is only a small token of our appreciation, and I sincerely hope that it will become a place throughout the years for friends, loved ones, and those who simply care to gather and pay tribute those who have put our freedom above everything else. I’m personally very grateful that the pendulum has finally swung the other way in our country, and that we no longer need to blame the soldiers for doing what their leaders command. I pray that we’ll continue to welcome our Military home with pride, gratitude, and honor.
God bless them, and God bless America.
